I got a mail from Mother’s Recipe Team and they invite me to participate in a unique contest: ‘Mother’s Recipe: Innovative RecipeChallenge’!. The challenge is to come up with an innovative recipe by using any of these Mother’s recipe products in the hamper send by them. Suddenly I mailed my address and phone number to the team to confirm my participation. After few days, I got a hamper with Mother’s recipe products and I was wondered what to do with these one.
I thought of preparing “Kerala Tapioca biriyani with Chicken“. So I chose Mother’s recipe: Instant Chicken Biriyani Mix to innovate it. Kerala Tapioca Biriyani with Chicken/ Kappa biriyani/ Kappa erachi is an authentic dish of God’s own country – Kerala. It is often served in brunch time with a Sulaimani. Kappa biriyani is a combination of cooked or mashed tapioca mixed with meat gravy (it can be beef, mutton, pork or chicken) and grated fried coconut with spices.
Tapioca/Kappa, the main ingredient of our dish is a staple food in many regions. It is used as a thickening agent in various foods. Kappa is widely consumed by the people of Kerala as breakfast or evening. Mashed tapioca with coconut and spices or mixing with meat is the common dish used by the people of Kerala.
Kerala Tapioca Biriyani with Chicken/ Kappa biriyani/ Kappa erachi

- 1/2kg Tapioca
- 1 cup Finely grated coconut
- Salt (to taste)
- Oil (I used coconut oil)
Chicken gravy preparation
- 1/2kg Chicken pieces with bones
- 75g Mother's recipe's Instant Chicken biriyani mix
- 1 tablespoon Ginger paste
- 2 Large Green chilies
- 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon Red Chili powder
- 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
- Salt (to taste)
- Mustard seeds
- Dry red chili
- Small onion
- Curry leaves
- While frying the grated coconut, grind it in a blender so that it become finely grated and easy to fry them evenly.
- Tapioca should be cooked properly or till it become easy to smash.
